The recent Senate debate between Bruce Braley and Joni Ernst exposed a serious lack of knowledge on the science of climate change by Ernst. She repeated her previous statements that she hasn’t seen proof that it is caused by man. Earlier she has been quoted as saying she hasn’t seen proof of climate change.

This is especially disturbing because she promotes her experience as a soldier as evidence of her leadership and knowledge. However, the U.S. military leadership in the Pentagon’s quadrennial defense review directly links climate change to national security. Gen. Charles Wald, who contributed to this report, says, “Now we’re saying it’s going to be a direct cause of instability.”

The report details how rising sea levels, extreme storms and massive population dislocations will contribute to greater global insecurity and be a major threat to America’s national security.

How can Ernst brag about her military experience when she is so uninformed about the extensive military concerns about climate change? Ernst’s lack of interest in informing herself about one of the greatest threats to national security should disqualify her for the Senate.
